In 1998, Encounter the Gospel of Life, Inc. (EGL, Encounter) was started by a few local parishes and organizations, in cooperation with the Archdiocese of Washington Office of Youth Ministry. Through our justice and service experiences, we provide opportunities for formation and transformation for young people, young adults and adults. Encounter is an intense work camp and a deeply spiritual retreat, as well as engaging, exciting and fun catechesis all rolled into one.
Direct-Relational Ministry and Eucharistic Community are two of our hallmarks. That simply means that we build friendships and really get to know each other and the people we serve. We are growing as the “Body of Christ.” We see that the people we hope to serve, are serving us too. We encounter Christ, in His distressing disguise, among the poor, elderly, marginalized and sick… and in each other.
Encounter began as a small local work camp with about 120 participants and has grown to host 300 participants each year. Our participants come from the Archdioceses of Washington and Baltimore as well as several other states. In addition to serving others, Encounter also offers formation, leadership training, music, drama and liturgical ministries. Our House Band will minister to thousands of people this year at local and regional events. We provide training, workshops and formation throughout the year. Mostly, Encounter is about living the Gospel through relationships, awareness and formation. We minister to those in need and teach others to do the same.
Encounter the Gospel of Life Inc. is a private non-profit 501-c3 organization in the Roman Catholic tradition. Our leadership is comprised solely of volunteers who are currently volunteering and working as professional youth ministers.
